So I managed to go to the dentist today after neglecting my teeth and gums since 2011. I was noticing that my gums have been bleeding a lot lately and it was really uncomfortable specially after brushing my teeth. It turns out that I have Periodontitis which is a serious gum infection that destroys the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth.

I hated going to the dentist and this is one of the reasons I rarely went. I just couldn't stand the tools they use to clean my teeth

I only went last 2011 because I had my wisdom teeth removed lol. I should have gone and now I regret it!! It turns out that brushing your teeth is not enough and proper flossing is needed to avoid gingivitis which can progress to Periodontitis if left untreated.

Once you have Periodontitis, you have to be really serious about taking care of your teeth and this requires going to the dentist every four months until the condition gets better. There are other treatments available as well such as non surgical: scaling, root-planing and antibiotics and surgery. The dentist has not suggested these yet so I am waiting for the next 4-6 months if the condition improves. So guys and gals DO NOT NEGLECT YOUR TEETH!!!. Go to the dentist regularly (every 6 months) or as suggested by your dentist.

This concerns me :( I brush and floss daily but haven't been to the dentist in about 4 or 5 years...just the pictures of those instruments posted makes my stomach do flip flops!

Only way I'm going to the dentist is if they give me sedatives. Lots and lots of sedatives.

yeah... The thing too is when I brush my teeth I brush 'em too hard and this caused some of my gums to recede. This means that the gums and the bones in your mouth move away from your teeth, leaving the roots exposed. This is one of the reasons and the bad flossing too sigh.

Man I went after three years of neglect and heavy opiate use and I had like 7 cavaties. Apparently opiates change the PH in your mouth and cause dry rot. I am an anal brusher too.

If you follow a regimen to make your gums more healthy, and consume more collagen, things can improve.

Sorry, I should have been more specific in my last post.

Tips:
1) Brush and floss daily (in that order), no matter what. Brush at an angle so you aren't brushing the gums but just the teeth.
2) Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol as they will dry out your mouth. Salt water is a healthy rinse to use following flossing. You can also use 3.5% peroxide, one cap full, after flossing. It will kill all bacteria in your mouth and help with tissue oxygenation. Rinse thoroughly with water after using.
3) Frankincense and myrrh as a tincture dropped into water can be used as a mouthwash. These have been shown to promote tissue regeneration. If you can handle the taste then use the straight tincture. I've seen this work in at least 3 cases.
4) Gum stimulators - those little pointy rubber-headed devices - should be used daily to gently massage the gums and promote blood flow.
5) Keep your mouth moist at all times. Dry socket is one of the leading reasons for gum recession and periodontitis. Use a toothpaste that contains xylitol, or chew a xylitol gum before bedtime. It naturally promotes salivary flow and has the added benefit of killing oral bacteria.
6) Make sure you are getting adequate vitamin D, calcium and magnesium in your diet in order to help with bone remineralization. Roasted sesame seeds are the highest source of dietary calcium in the world.
7) Although the use of fluoride toothpaste is controversial, it could be good to brush with some at least periodically because it will help remineralize those roots.
8 ) Bone marrow broths are high in collagen, which your body needs to regenerate gum tissue and tooth pulp.

Thank you so much foreigner, after reading your post I have started the angle brushing. I'm trying to practice gently brushing my teeth as well since I am used to brushing it too hard. The mouthwash I have contains alcohol so I didnt use it and used salt water instead. I'm not familiar with frankincense and myrrh so ill fo some research tomorrow and see where I can get these. I think as far as vitamin d magnesium and calcium I've got these covered. I just need to add bone marrow broths to meals.

Tea tree oil is good, there are a number of commercial products that utilize it, so it shouldn't be hard to find.

If you brush and floss daily and do not have sensitivities or discomfort you are probably alright. I skipped going to the dentist from 2002 to 2012 and I'm fine. The only reason I went in 2012 was because I cracked a tooth eating sweet potato fries of all things. Since then though I have gone regularly and the only thing they keep bugging me about is two of my old fillings have cracked and they want to replace them. I told them thanks, but not thanks. No discomfort and no sensitivity yet so I dont feel the need to have further work done.

Well of course they keep bugging you about fixing your cracked fillings. Those microfractures are allowing bacteria and microbes in to destroy healthy enamel and dentin underneath the existing filling. Wait to you feel pain or discomfort and be ready for a root canal to save the tooth. But with your below average dental knowledge, you'll most likely just tell the dentist to "yank it out". Best of luck!

Well that makes me feel better than.

I've never had a cavity in my life and have no pain/swelling/bleeding etc. *crosses fingers*. The only "issue" I have is that my gums are receding from grinding my teeth in my sleep from stress.

Lucky! Since I started with flossing the gums don't bleed anymore. You may want to still get an appt with the dentist for the receding gums to see what will be the best solution for that ♡

The last time I went to the dentists, it was actually to address that issue. It was a periodontist that I saw. What they did was cut into the roof of my mouth and sewed that skin over where it was receding...it hurt like a BITCH... And it was expensive. I still have 5 other areas that need to be done :\ they didn't even give me nitrous or versed! All they gave me was lorazepam and said "listen to your iPod" lol. When I go I'm going to find a dentist that will do everything at once and make sure I'm not "awake" for it.

Yikes! ! That must have been really uncomfortable. I have another appointment in 3 weeks because one of my tooth neds crowning but the specialist said he needs to fix my gums. He said there's no pain but seeing the tools just makes me want to pass out

That's outrageous, but there are dentists out there who are like that, especially old school ones. Once time when I was 12 years old and at the dentist, he took issue with one of my back molars. He said "hold on one second" and before I even knew what was happening he ripped my tooth out of my mouth, root and all. I was screaming. My parents threatened to sue but that old bastard didn't have any remorse and claimed he was following procedure. I mean, what kind of horror show medicine is that?

Thankfully I think that generation has mostly died off in dentistry and there are more sane standards now. There are dentists out there who aren't perverse sadists and will numb your mouth.

In the early 90's i was a tweaker. Had a good job and ignored my teeth. It cost me 2 teeth in the end. I finally started going about7 years ago and I had the same thing. I'm now at least 20K prolly more into my dental care. I go every 4 months for a deep cleaning.

I don't believe that it doesn't go away. They told me that. But it's gone. My gums would bleed if I sang a song. I had abscesses that I would pop several times a day where they were are exactly where the teeth I had to remove were.

I now have an implant went through laser gum surgery to kill the infection and brush and floss 4-5 times a day. I no longer have any sign of any kind of gum disease. However they say it's undercontrol. One time I missed a cleaning and went 8 months and I was still fine.

So I wouldn't believe the " IT WILL NEVER GO AWAY". crap. thats just to get a patient for life. But it's actually awesome to go so often. My teeth feel great and I know I have nothing to worry about.

I only lost 2 teeth, but I was young when I was doing what I did. 16-25. Now in my late 30's I say go to the dentist very often till the problem is taken care of and then every 6 months after that.

A great habit for healthy teeth and gums is to do warm rock salt water rinses every once in a while. They are great for the teeth...I learned this habit in this bo ok called "21 unique and easy habits..."..cant remember the name ...that I downloaded on kindl e ...some very cheap home solutions are available and we dont need costly dental treatments///
